Witnessing the Mystic Serpents
The village of Nogotal, near Nourozabad, is situated around 35 kilometers from Umaria district headquarters. This region, once cloaked in dense forests and solitude, has witnessed a recent surge in activity. The area was once known for its serpent-inhabited kunds and lakes. According to locals, the region was inhabited by numerous Nagas, some of which were gem-bearing. People used to venture here to obtain these precious gems, immersing themselves in spiritual practices. However, with increasing human presence, these serpents retreated to avoid any disturbances.
The Enigmatic Kund
According to local resident Kaushal Lahiri from Nourozabad, the legendary Nogotal Kund and its surrounding lakes were once frequented by various types of Nagas. These snakes would roam freely, leaving a sense of awe and fear in neighboring villages. It was believed that specific rituals and offerings could appease these serpents. Many individuals, driven by the desire to acquire Nagmani, visited this place, engaging in spiritual practices. However, encountering a group of serpents would often send them running in fear. Remarkably, the serpents coexisted peacefully without causing harm to anyone.
The Mention in Ancient Texts
Vedic literature, particularly the renowned Vrihatsamhita, contains references to Nagmani, making its existence undeniable. Nagmani is believed to be a special gem found specifically in snakes. The gem is characterized by its deep black color and is said to be located on the head of the Nagas. Sometimes, the serpents would bring the gem to the surface, illuminating the surroundings with its radiant glow. While some may consider it mere folklore, the fact that ancient scriptures emphasize Nagmani cannot be ignored.

Nagmani Variations
According to Jyotishacharya Pandit Janardan Shukla, various books mention Nagmani, describing it as a blue, black, or exceptionally luminous gem resembling the neck of a peacock. It is believed to possess mystical powers, and hence, kings used to keep it in their courts. It was believed that those who possessed Nagmani would gain invincibility. Varahamihira, in his work Mihira Samhita, also mentions Nagmani, highlighting its use as an antidote against venomous bites. It is said that Nagmani exists in different forms, with the luminous variety being extremely rare, as it indicates a divine connection. Obtaining such a gem is considered a nearly impossible feat. However, some individuals still possess Nagmanis resembling black stones, which they claim to have obtained from serpents.

The Scientific Perspective
For those who rely on scientific reasoning, Nagmani is often regarded as a product of superstition. They argue that snake revenge stories are nothing but myths. Snakes do not possess the cognitive abilities to remember human faces or engage in targeted acts of retaliation. Biting humans repeatedly out of vengeance is purely a baseless belief.
The presence ofNagmani in snakes is also seen as a myth by those who trust in science. They perceive it as a mere figment of imagination popularized through movies and fictional stories. Dr. K.P. Singh, a scientist, asserts that revenge-seeking snakes are nothing more than folklore. Snakes do not possess the cognitive capacity to hold grudges or engage in deliberate acts of aggression towards humans. The notion of Nagmani’s existence is also considered to be a myth by those who favor scientific explanations.

Despite the varying beliefs and skepticism surrounding Nagmani, the fascination and intrigue it evokes remain undeniable. The legends, ancient texts, and local tales associated with Nagmani continue to capture the imagination of people. The Kund and temple in Bhoriband Road serve as reminders of the mystique that surrounds these mythical gems. Whether Nagmani is a tangible reality or a result of human imagination, it continues to ignite curiosity and awe.
In conclusion, the captivating allure of Nagmani persists, transcending the boundaries of belief and skepticism. While its existence remains a subject of debate, the stories, legends, and ancient scriptures associated with Nagmani continue to captivate our imagination. Whether it is a mystical gem or a product of folklore, the fascination and wonder it inspires remind us of the enduring power of mythology and the human quest for extraordinary phenomena.
